Proposals are perhaps one of my favorite things to capture.  The thrill and pure emotion of the moment gets me every time.

What I love the most is being able to plan and execute the surprise.  For Tommy’s proposal, I worked with the mother of the bride to be to set up a “family” photo shoot while they were vacationing to El Capitan Canyon.  This was a brilliant idea because Katelyn had no idea as to what was to come.  I photographed the family for a couple minutes, then moved on to couple photos.  When we moved onto Katelyn and Tommy’s turn for their couple photo, you could tell Tommy was a bit nervous.  And understandably so, I would imagine that asking that simple question could be the most important words you may ever ask in a lifetime and just the weight of it all would be nerve-wracking.

To buy time I asked them to do a second pose where Katelyn said to Tommy, “This is a bit weird”.  He replied, “It’s about to get weirder.”  She instantly realized that Tommy was about to propose as he got down on one knee and asked her to be his for the rest of their lives.  Tears began to flow from all the family and friends gathered around, myself included.  I really can’t help but tear up every time I see a proposal.

As we took a few more family and couple photos, I ended the evening being incredibly grateful. Grateful I was invited into this family’s life to capture imagery that can be relived for decades to come. And SO grateful to be able to witness such a beautiful proposal at El Capitan State Beach. Congratulations Katelyn and Tommy, I am so thrilled for you both! Wishing you all a lifetime of love, happiness, and prosperity!
